The player can choose where to place their units during planning stage. Positioning is very important for certain units’ skill targeting, and can often decide the difference between win or loss. While the nuances of positioning various champions are often very intricate, in general, tanky units want to be positioned such that they draw aggro and CC enemy champions, while damage dealing carries want to be positioned to maximize their safety and damage output.

Champion aggro

At the start of combat, each unit will target the closest enemy unit within the unit’s attack range. If no unit is within range, then the unit will move towards the closest enemy until there is an enemy within attack range. After the current target becomes untargetable (due to trait, or death), then aggro will switch to the next closest champion within auto attack range.
